About Us

We've done great things in the past. Today, we're doing great things for the future.

Merck and Schering-Plough recently merged to create a new company. Today, we are the second-largest pharmaceutical company in the world. We also are a global leader in consumer products and animal care.

Both Merck and Schering-Plough have a long and rich history of working to improve people's health and well-being. Through the years, our researchers have helped to find new ways to treat and prevent illness - from the discovery of vitamin B1, to the first measles vaccine, to cold remedies and antacids, to the first statins to treat high cholesterol. Our scientists also have helped develop many products to improve animal health, including vaccines and antibiotics.

While we are proud of our past, we are enthusiastic about the future of this new company and we are excited to help create a healthier, brighter future for people around the world.

Culture

Our goal is to lead the way to a healthier future. But we also care about how we get there together.

As a company whose products touch the lives and well being of people around the world, we hold ourselves to a high standard. And we expect others to hold us to that same high standard.

We believe in operating openly, honestly and with the highest degree of ethics and integrity. This includes:

  • making sure that the company complies with all applicable laws and regulations globally;
  • continually reinforcing our overall commitment to ethical business practices and behavior, at every level of the company, through the Merck Office of Ethics and our company's code of conduct; and
  • safeguarding individual privacy expectations through our global privacy program.

Diversity at Merck

We also value the diverse contributions of our employees around the world, and are committed to creating a workplace that is open, welcome and respectful of all of our employees.

These values and principles are at the heart of who we are as a company.

Ethics in the Workplace

It takes more than having the right mechanisms, standards and training in place to ensure an open, ethical business environment. We work hard to make sure we live up to our own high standards, every day.

Diversity

Diversity is woven into every aspect of our work.

We have three major resources to help implement our diversity strategy:

  • Diversity and Work Environment Center of Excellence: This is Merck's central office overseeing diversity and inclusion in all business practices
  • Global Constituency Groups: We've taken an innovative, global approach to our diversity strategy through the creation of Global Constituency Groups. These groups represent the diverse constituencies in our company, our customers and society, in general. The members represent different geographies, cultures and areas of expertise. Together they reflect Merck employees and customers globally. They are:
    • Women
    • Men
    • Generational
    • Hispanic
    • Black
    • Asia Pacific
    • Native Indigenous
    • Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender
    • Differently-abled
    • Interfaith
  • Employee Resource Groups: Through these voluntary, Merck-supported groups, employees network to foster professional development, find informal mentors, participate in teams within and across work groups, and serve as an educational and cultural resource for other employees and business groups at Merck. These employees also act as contact points within their communities outside of work. Our Employee Resource Groups are:
    • Black Employees' Network
    • Asia Pacific Network
    • Gay and Lesbian Employees and Allies at Merck
    • Merck Hispanic Organization
    • Disability Advisory Council
    • Veterans Leadership Network
    • Merck Interfaith Network
    • Merck Women's Network

Leadership Commitment

Diversity and inclusion are integrated into our leadership model, and are considered an essential leadership skill for all of our employees.

We expect all employees, beginning with our leaders, to achieve diversity and inclusion goals, which are used to gauge individual and company performance. We define, measure and reward diversity performance through a number of tools, including affirmative action plans and diversity objectives on our company scorecard.
